This book describes the procedure to create a road network in a GUI environment of a computer. With the network, the transport performance, including delay and travel time can be evaluated. In addition, optimisation of traffic signal can be achieved with genetic algorithm (GA). The optimal signal plan and its corresponding traffic states (flow and number of vehicles) can be derived. Possible extension with the plugin for more complex dynamics, e.g., heterogeneous flow, is reserved.

The current state-of-the-art software package is able to optimise off-line traffic signal in road networks, yet without certain features in countries with a significant number of motorbikes. If motorbikes (scooters) are not properly modelled, the performance difference between modes, dynamics of the heterogeneous flow, and accuracy of the result are not accounted. To cope with the issue, modelling heterogeneous flow is required. Then, the model is able to be applied in finding optimal traffic signal settings. This book introduces how to operate mixMIX, which can simulate mixed flow traffic with motorbikes in macroscopic manner and find optimal traffic signal settings. The structure of mixMIX, which is a plug-in of software Sigmix, and its running model are introduced. Then, operation in detail is demonstrated. Examples are shown how to apply mixMIX to investigate traffic, especially the mixed flow traffic, which has a much more complex dynamics than car-only traffic.

‘mixMIX’ released!

‘mixMIX’, the motorbike plug-in of ‘SIGMIX’ is released!

This is the 1st release of motorbike traffic flow simulation software ever!

It is capable of modelling scooters traffic, and of course the mixed flow

It is capable of modelling flows under urban traffic signal control…

And capable of optimising traffic signal with Scooters in the Performance Index (P.I.)!

‘Sigmix’ Updated

Sigmix is a software tool that can

  • Simulates the macroscopic traffic flow (engined with Cell Transmission Model (CTM)
  • Optimises the traffic signal with [total travel time] or [delay] minimised.

It can be applied in urban junction/arterial/network.

It is…

  • Easy to operate Graphical User Interface (GUI)… As easy as you can imaginenetwork.png
  • Aided with movement compatibility tool. Provides with
    • Compatibility checking,
    • intergreen setting,
    • stage setting suggestion.intergreen.png
  • armed with universal model that can deal with both congested and uncongested scenario.
  • equipped with objective function according to user needs…to  minimise ‘Total Travel Time’ or to minimise’Delay’optimisedSummary.png
  • Equipped with dialogue to see the [number of vehicles] or [outflow] by timeoutflow.png
  • capable of finding optimised signal planoptimisedTrafficSignal.png

It’s main physical simulator is: Cell Transmission Model (CTM) that keeps the traffic moving. It’s optimisation technique is Genetic Algorithms (GA) that mimics the mother nature of evolution to find the best traffic signal you need!
